transparent spacer When Visual Art is abundantly strong, the Community is abundantly strong
What an exciting time for all of the Visual Artists of Taos County! Can you hear the “buzz” about an idea whose time has come? Visual Artists are intuitively feeling that we are committed to creating a huge shift in the energy here so that Visual Artists will have a direct voice , supported by their power in numbers. As a result, our TAO membership numbers are rising quickly. We are grateful for the huge response to an equally huge movement.

Know that we, the seven artists of the steering committee, are committed and dedicated to: manifesting and expanding strong international connections; creating the Taos Visual Arts Center; producing a productive county-wide studio tour with a beautiful catalogue and preview show; comradery amongst ourselves. This organization is a cohesive element for abundant economic growth for our entire community.

transparent spacer Momentum is building
Over the past month we have received a lot of interest in both TAO, the organization and our newsletter. The Tempo article helped to get the word out to local artists and supporters of the arts. The steering committee, which meets once a week, has been busy looking ahead towards the Studio Tour Catalogue and funding/building/land prospects for our future Visual Arts Center. So much of what we do is networking, talking to people and integrating ourselves with the town of Taos and local artists. Our main focus this month is to build our membership so, get the word out, convince the squeamish and the folks “waiting to see…” that they need to be a member of TAO. We are a community creative and strong.

transparent spacer Artist Quote
...While only touching the fringes of environmental problems, I am happy to have been able to have had some small effect on the increasing awareness of the world situation through both my photographs and my vocal assertions….I believe the ultimate objective of life lies in creative and productive work...

transparent spacer Ted Egri, Honorary TAO Member
Ted Egri, sculptor, painter       On March 31, 2008, a presentation was made at an award ceremony in the State Capitol Rotunda, Santa Fe, New Mexico. The occasion marked the 75th Anniversary of the WPA Works Projects Administration which was part of FDR’s New Deal Legislation. Ted Egri, who will be 95 years old this year, was honored and given public recognition for being a participant in the New Deal. FDR’s granddaughter, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, was present and read from FDR’s nomination speech, tying it into today’s economic job crisis situation. President Roosevelt talked about creating jobs and First Lady Eleanor made sure that visual artists were included. Ted Egri, Elises Rodriguez and Abad Lucero are the only three WPA Artists still living. Ted did his WPA commissioned murals in New York City and at other national sights. The New Deal Collection may be seen in the Governor’s Gallery in the Capitol Building in Santa Fe until May 18th. Ted’s work is on the second floor.

His art varies from flowing abstractions to the highly political, often speaking to issues of oppressed or even tormented humankind. This is not to say that the work is either gloomy or macabre, for it is not. The forms, even those constructed from substantial metals are filled with a sense of motion, sometimes the motion of distress, sometimes that of fantasy. Santa Fe artist and art critic Alfred Mooring wrote: "Egri has studied the illusion of movement and is able to suggest movement by handling broken forms against broken forms. He has used certain principles of the Italian Futurists with a good deal of skill. Angles are important to this artist; they add strength and augment the softer rhythms of curves. It is the basis of abstraction that makes even his more objective work live with inner movement." --- David L. Witt, Curator, The Harwood Museum, Taos, NM.

Ted’s art can be seen in Taos at the Envision Gallery or visit their web site envisiongallery.net

transparent spacer Studio Tour– October 3-5, 2008
We are proud of the first project of TAO. We have organized a Taos County-wide Tour of Visual Artists’ Studios. Becoming a Tour Member enables participants to get a free web page on our web site. In conjunction with the Studio Tour, an Exhibition which serves as an Index for the tour, will be presented at the Kachina Lodge Gallery, 413 Paseo del Pueblo Norte. Two other events will take place at the Kachina Lodge: a Friday evening Exhibition Reception and a Saturday evening “Meet More Artists” Party. These events will increase the artists’ visibility as well as welcome attendees to participate in this major contribution to the community at large. Businesses in town can participate by providing Hotels, B&B’s and Restaurants for the hundreds of expected art lovers coming to Taos for the weekend and by offering in-kind donations and alternative artist exhibition spaces.
