...While only touching the fringes of environmental problems, I am happy to have been able to have
had some small effect on the increasing awareness of the world situation through both my photographs
and my vocal assertions….I believe the ultimate objective of life lies in creative and productive work... From: Ansel Adams: An Autobiography |

On March 31, 2008, a presentation was made at an award ceremony in the State Capitol
Rotunda, Santa Fe, New Mexico. The occasion marked the 75th Anniversary of the WPA Works Projects
Administration which was part of FDR’s New Deal Legislation. Ted Egri, who will be 95 years old this year,
was honored and given public recognition for being a participant in the New Deal. FDR’s granddaughter,
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, was present and read from FDR’s nomination speech, tying it into today’s economic
job crisis situation. President Roosevelt talked about creating jobs and First Lady Eleanor made sure that
visual artists were included. Ted Egri, Elises Rodriguez and Abad Lucero are the only three WPA Artists still living.
Ted did his WPA commissioned murals in New York City and at other national sights. The New Deal Collection
may be seen in the Governor’s Gallery in the Capitol Building in Santa Fe until May 18th. Ted’s work is on the second floor. His art varies from flowing abstractions to the highly political, often speaking to issues of oppressed or even tormented humankind. This is not to say that the work is either gloomy or macabre, for it is not. The forms, even those constructed from substantial metals are filled with a sense of motion, sometimes the motion of distress, sometimes that of fantasy. Santa Fe artist and art critic Alfred Mooring wrote: "Egri has studied the illusion of movement and is able to suggest movement by handling broken forms against broken forms. He has used certain principles of the Italian Futurists with a good deal of skill. Angles are important to this artist; they add strength and augment the softer rhythms of curves. It is the basis of abstraction that makes even his more objective work live with inner movement." --- David L. Witt, Curator, The Harwood Museum, Taos, NM. Ted’s art can be seen in Taos at the Envision Gallery or visit their web site envisiongallery.net |

| We are proud of the first project of TAO. We have organized a Taos County-wide Tour of Visual Artists’ Studios. Becoming a Tour Member enables participants to get a free web page on our web site. In conjunction with the Studio Tour, an Exhibition which serves as an Index for the tour, will be presented at the Kachina Lodge Gallery, 413 Paseo del Pueblo Norte. Two other events will take place at the Kachina Lodge: a Friday evening Exhibition Reception and a Saturday evening “Meet More Artists” Party. These events will increase the artists’ visibility as well as welcome attendees to participate in this major contribution to the community at large. Businesses in town can participate by providing Hotels, B&B’s and Restaurants for the hundreds of expected art lovers coming to Taos for the weekend and by offering in-kind donations and alternative artist exhibition spaces. |
